The theme of the 2022 edition of E.A.T. was taken from the title of Henri Bergson’s book “Matter and Memory: An Essay on the Relationship of Body and Mind”, which the French philosopher published in 1896. His work is part of the 19th century debate on whether memory is physically stored in the brain or rather spiritual, resonating in the soul. Bergson proposes a synthesis of the two, emphasizing their spiritual connection.
Bergson’s work remains relevant to contemporary debates, for example in the context of digitalization, the prevalence of presentism, or the confrontation of human time with geological time spans. His system of thought is equally inspiring in its ability to deal with contradictions and in its criticism of reductionism and fundamentalism. For Bergson, concepts are not definitions but processes.
Following Bergson’s path, we attempted to listen, engage and share with the speakers of 2022, who will address a range of topics from the relationship between body and mind to sustainability, the different forms of memory, the articulation of time, and the experience of memory.
