In this video, architect Francis Kéré talks about his building projects in Burkina Faso, with which he aims to inspire and support the local population. He uses simple materials such as wood and clay; the villagers are involved in decision-making and the realization. In 2007, Kéré built a school in his home village of Gando, for which he received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The Opera Village Africa, which he developed in close collaboration with the German director Christoph Schlingensief, also attracted international attention.
“Who is willing to plant a tree knowing they may never sit in its shade? Only those who understand the larger global challenge — and feel responsible for acting on it.”
