HEINZ MACK: THE SAHARA PROJECT

About the talk

In this video, artist Heinz Mack speaks about his artisitc projects in both deserts, as well as Arctic regions. Mack traveled to the desert and the North Pole several times to realize his artistic projects, in which his abstract, geometric sculptures react to the surrounding landscape. In 1959, he developed the Sahara project, followed by his first stay in the Arctic in 1976. Mack was drawn to these places by the silence, the light, and the infinity of space, which sharpens the senses. His site-specific installations enter into a symbiosis with the untouched nature but do not seek to dominate it. In 2016/17, his installation 'Sky Over Nine Columns' was shown in St. Moritz.

Please note that the language spoken in this video is German.

“Die Grenzen und Horizonte sind so weit entfernt, dass der gesamte Raum in der Sahara wie auch in der Arktis unbegrenzt zu sein scheint.”
