2021: LONGUE DURÉE

During the 2021 edition of E.A.T., which consisted of a 12-hour stream, artists, architects, designers, writers, and scientists shared their ideas, thoughts and projects, around the theme of “Longue Durée.”

“Longue Durée” literally means “long duration.” It is a view of history first introduced by the French historian Fernand Braudel. Braudel’s “Longue Durée” allows us to interpret crises as opportunities for fundamental structural change. Art is one mean by which we can reimagine existing paradigms to accommodate new discoveries and create new realities.

“Longue Durée” also inspired the length of this years’ edition: a monumentally long streaming session. “A kind of slow cultural TV,” to quote curator Bice Curiger. “When you stay on a topic longer, see what comes and let yourself be surprised.”

In line with the theme of the “Longue Durée” and with our commitment to sustainability and safety, the lineup was composed by international speakers tuning in from home, including numerous E.A.T. alumni, and Swiss-based thought leaders.

Curated by Daniel Baumann, Bice Curiger, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Philip Ursprung.
