Etel Adnan (1925-2021) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, writer, and lecturer. She studied Philosophy in Paris, Berkeley, and Harvard. Adnan taught at colleges and universities in the U.S. before returning to Lebanon in 1972 to work as a journalist. Due to the civil war, she returned to Paris in 1976. Her artistic work has been shown in biennials and exhibitions, including the Documenta 13 in Kassel (2012) and the Whitney Biennial in New York City (2014). In 2021, Adnan was awarded the Lichtwark Prize Hamburg for her Lifetime Achievement. Her abstract art moves between the Eastern and Western world, spanning different forms of expression, languages, and cultures.
