Isabel Lewis is a Dominican-American artist and choreographer living between Vienna and Berlin. Working across contemporary art, dance, and music she develops expanded choreographic formats that centre bodily experience and experiment with alternative forms of sociality. Hosting is fundamental to her practice: her “occasions” unsettle conventional distinctions between performer and audience, artwork and social situation, while questioning the protocols through which institutions organise attention, participation, and encounter. Her work has been presented internationally at institutions including Tate Modern, Haus der Kunst Munich, Gropius Bau Berlin, Palais de Tokyo, Performance Space New York, the Sharjah Biennial, and Ming Contemporary Art Museum Shanghai. Lewis is Co-Artistic Director of Tanzquartier Wien and Professor of Choreography and Head of the Master’s programme in Choreography at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch / HZT Berlin.
