Jan von Brevern (b. 1975) is a German art historian. He first studied physics in Hamburg and Naples before turning to art history, philosophy and Romance studies in Hamburg in 2000. In 2010, he received the Erich Stenger Prize from the German Society for Photography. Since 2005, von Brevern has published numerous reviews, conference discussions and articles in specialist journals, mainly on photo-historical topics. From 2010, Jan von Brevern worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Art History at the Free University in Berlin. In 2012/2013 he was a Volkswagen Foundation Fellow at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Since February 2023, he has been Heisenberg Professor of Art and Cultural History at the Faculty of Architecture & Urban Studies at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
