Joachim Gauck

Joachim Gauck (b. 1940) is a German politician and civil rights activist, who was President of the Federal Republic of Germany from 2012 to 2017. A former Lutheran pastor, he came to public attention as a civil rights activist in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). In 1991, he became the first Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Records of the GDR Security Service.
