Joachim Gauck

Joachim Gauck (b. 1940) is a German politician and civil rights activist, who served as President of Germany from 2012 to 2017. A former Lutheran pastor, he came to public attention as an anti-communist civil rights activist in East Germany. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he was the first Federal Commissioner for the Processing of Files on Persons of the Former Security Services of the German Democratic Republic.
