CHRISTINE LEVY: GLACIERS IN A WARMER ATMOSPHERE

About the talk

The glaciers in the Swiss Engadin are melting — with dramatic consequences for the landscape and the ecosystem. In this video, geographer Christine Levy describes the causes of the melting and the resulting effects, such as the formation of glacier caves, new lakes, and dead ice. One way to stop the process is to cover the glaciers with white fleece or a layer of artificial snow that reflects the sun. She also points out the advantages of artificially formed ice cones, the so-called ice stupas, which have already been used successfully in the Himalayas.

“Maybe no place on earth is closer to hell than Antarctica. Perhaps, however, no place is closer to paradise either.”
