ISABEL NOLAN: INFINITE AND SUPER-INFINITE FOREVER - 40,000 YEARS IN THREE SCULPTURES

About the talk

Based on her own artistic practice, Isabel Nolan addresses the pair of opposites “vertical – horizontal”. The human being who walks upright has introduced a hierarchy between these two states. While verticality stood for reason and the striving for the higher, horizontality referred to the unconscious and animalistic. In art, the physical laws of nature could be overcome. Works such as the prehistoric Lion Human from Southern Germany or the installation “Dwarf Parade” (1969) by the American artist Paul Thek would have changed her experience of time and space.

“Beauty is a fusion or even kind of a confusion of both gravity and grace, which affirmatively affirms our human in-betweenness.”

– Isabel Nolan
