JOSEPH GRIGELY: NOTHING BUT QUOTATIONS

About the talk

In this video, artist Joseph Grigely talks about his experience of communication, which also plays a central role in his artistic practice. He is convinced that a person’s quotations are just as memorable as the physical appearance. Grigely, who went deaf at the age of ten, asked numerous people to communicate with him in writing. These handwritten notes often have banal and everyday content. By writing them down, the fleeting comments are given a material form. The white or colored notes form an archive from which Grigely draws for his artistic work.

“A portrait is not just a visual construction. We remember people not just for what they look like, but also for what they think and say.”
