Photographer Juergen Teller and curator Francesco Bonami talk about Teller’s charity project for the English children’s hospice Demelza. Teller’s photographs of children, some of whom are terminally ill, are not intended to be aesthetic or beautiful. He imbues the tragic subject with gravitas rather than heaviness, Bonami said. For Teller, working with the young patients and their parents was a cathartic experience. The project grounded him.
“There is a difference between heavy and gravity. Gravity is something that grounds you in the world, in reality.”
– Francesco Bonami
